Prologue The Codex Speaks

Y ou are reading this because something has already changed in you. The lie has worn thin.

Perhaps it arrived as a feeling: a wrongness at the edge of perception, a suspicion that the story had missing pages. Perhaps you saw something that your version of reality couldn’t reconcile, and rather than blink it away, you stared back. Perhaps that something stared at you, and the recognition in its eyes felt inexplicably like memory.

This is not a coincidence. And this is not fiction.

The document you hold is an excerpt of the Sundered Codex. It is a living record maintained across the ages by those charged with remembering what the world was forced to forget. It is incomplete by design. What you can access now is what your mind can currently bear. As you move deeper into the true account of the world, new entries will surface. The Codex grows with the one who carries it.

We do not ask you to believe what follows. Belief is a door. It is you who must pass the threshold.

How to Enter

Every reader arrives at this book through one of three doors.

The first door is curiosity. The chapters ahead contain the true history of the Earth: the Dragons, the Terrors, the Kin, the Great Lie, and the crisis now breaking beneath a city near you. This door asks nothing of you but attention. Many readers never need another one.

The second door is the game. The Codex also presents as a game, which is an old kind of storytelling with rules. People gather. Each takes on a Persona, a single soul inside this world. Dice decide the moments that nerve and planning cannot. If that is why you came, the history still comes first; a Persona without the world is only a costume. Your door opens at Chapter Thirteen.

The third door is physical. Some places in this book exist. The building at 7th and Broadway in Los Angeles is real, and the tree grows through its floor exactly as described. The Codex also travels as a companion app: it surfaces new entries as you are ready for them, and when you stand in certain rooms, it knows.
