Part One: The True Account Chapter Eleven: The Sentinels

[EPIGRAPH — Corvus, addressing the Faction Leaders at The Republic] §

"The demons may be coming for you all, but they know me by name. I once stood amongst them in the obsidian courts. I know what they are, and they have not forgiven my abandonment. So do not question my investment in these walls. There is no one in this city who wants, nor needs, a Sanctuary more desperately than I."

T he Sentinels predate every other faction in this archive by a span of time that makes recorded political history look like a footnote. They were not born from a visionary manifesto, a civilian revolution, or a generational grievance.

They were founded by the Dragons.

They are the wardens of reality. They are the organization that remembers everything and advertises nothing. While the rest of the Awakened world wages bloody campaigns over governance and social Renown, the Sentinels are quietly watching the floorboards, measuring the breathing of the apocalypse trapped underneath.

The Dragon Mandate

At the dawn of the Age of Myth, the five surviving Dragons prepared for the most agonizing tactical retreat in planetary history. The Ancient Terrors were hammering the dimensional barriers of their prison. The Dragons knew they had to descend into the deep bedrock and devote their entire might to holding the cage shut. They knew they would never return.

Before they went into the dark, the Dragons left something behind.

They gathered the most enlightened mortals they could find across every Secondborn race, Humans, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Ogres, and Giants, along with those few Firstborn who had not yet abandoned the surface world. They spent those final years teaching them the Old Ways.

They taught these mortals how to read the dimensional spectrum. They taught them how to identify the whisper-agents of the Terrors, how to regulate the Ley Line networks that serve as the Earth's nervous system, and how to guard the bleeding edge of Prime Reality. Most importantly, they revealed the truth of the Grand Cycle: that mortal souls reincarnate, refining with each violent, beautiful life, until they are evolved enough to rejoin the Source. The Dragons explained that their own role in this machinery would continue, but they could no longer perform their earthly duties from the deep.

Then, the Dragons descended and the surface lost its godly guardians.

What they left behind were the Sentinels.

The Mandate and the Accord

The Sentinels operate under two distinct layers of authority.

The Dragon Mandate is their original, sacred charge. It is older than human civilization and older than the Great Lie. Its directives are absolute: maintain cosmic balance across all dimensions, guard the Bastions where the Dragons sleep, regulate the Ley Lines, and eradicate the influence of the Ancient Terrors.

The Accord is narrower, more recent, and highly visible. It is the legal architecture that governs conduct within Sanctuaries. The Sentinels forged the Accord, and they enforce it ruthlessly. But the Accord is merely a tool of the Mandate.

The Sentinels care about Sanctuary politics the way a structural engineer cares about the upholstery in a skyscraper. They will absolutely enforce the structural rules of the space, but they do not care how the residents choose to decorate it. They are playing a longer game because they are the only people who know the actual dimensions of the board.

The Silent Evolution

Time has tested the Sentinels past the point where any mortal organization should have collapsed into dust.

The Age of Myth was their proving ground. The Sentinels operated openly, mediating territorial disputes and maintaining the alliance between humanity and the Kin. They failed. The Ancient Terrors seeded paranoia into human minds, warping trust into violent xenophobia across generations. The alliance rotted from the inside out. The Sentinels watched it burn, unable to stop it. The Third Sundering was not a sudden catastrophe; it was the terminal stage of a poison the Sentinels had spent eons treating.

When the Ogre Shamans detonated the Nevada basin and the Kin retreated into the Gloom, the Great Lie took hold.

The Sentinels did not retreat. They simply became invisible.

They embedded themselves in the universities, governments, dioceses, and forgotten archives of the surface world. They maintained their chapter houses near major Ley Line junctions. They watched humanity build a glittering global civilization entirely on top of a lie, and they waited for the lie to run its course.

It has taken six thousand years.

The Thwarted Sundering of the fifteenth century, the Fourth by the Archive’s count, was the closest they came to the end. Something ancient moved beneath Europe. The Ley Lines destabilized across the continent. The Sentinels intervened and stopped it. The knowledge of exactly what they sacrificed to halt that apocalypse is classified at the absolute highest level of the Order. The human historical record shows another great wave of the plague. The Sentinel archives show something considerably more sinister.

The Modern Age is the Sentinels' hour of reckoning. The Dream Prison is rotting. The dimensional barriers are giving way. The Kin are breaching the surface. An Order that has spent sixty centuries operating in total shadow must now decide how much truth to hand to a world that is completely unprepared to hear it.

[OBSERVATION — Chronomist Sera Dulain, Vault Eleven, Undisclosed Location, 2024] §

I have maintained the central archive for forty-one years. In that time, I have cataloged intelligence from six continents, filed reports on dimensional tearing in twenty-seven countries, and indexed the personal journals of four hundred field operatives. Most of those operatives did not survive to read their own files.

The pattern is accelerating. The frequency of Nether breaches has tripled in the last decade. The Ley Line network is destabilizing at a rate our models cannot project. The Ebon Watch is operating at surge capacity with no relief rotation in sight.

I note this not out of panic. The archive does not panic. It records.

But I will state this clearly. In forty-one years, I have never seen the Lumina Council convene four times in a single calendar year. They convened five times last year. The agenda for their sixth meeting is already circulating.

Something has fundamentally changed in the math of the world. I do not yet know what.

The Order's Structure

The Sentinels are a skeletal organization by design. Secrecy does not scale, and every additional initiate is a potential point of failure. What they lack in numbers they compensate for in the sheer depth of their training, the lethality of their equipment, and a command structure refined across hundreds of thousands of years of unbroken operation.

The Lumina Council The highest authority. A small body of elder Sentinels drawn from diverse species, whose identities and meeting coordinates are the Order's most heavily guarded secrets. The Council interprets the Dragon Mandate. They read the glacial patterns of dimensional drift and execute strategy measured in centuries.

The composition of the Council is not fixed, and replacements are never elected. They are simply recognized. When a seat empties, the remaining members know exactly who must fill it. This is not mysticism; it is the practical consequence of being led by the most karmically evolved beings on the planet.

Nexus Chapters Regional commands anchored near major Ley Line junctions. Each Chapter holds absolute responsibility for its territory: monitoring frequency stability, hunting Nether breaches, and coordinating field operations. A Chapter is typically commanded by a veteran who has survived a minimum of four decades in the field.

The Los Angeles Chapter is the most volatile command on the West Coast, bleeding resources to manage a relentless surge of Nether incursions. But the violence in Los Angeles is only the perimeter. The true anchor of the region lies inland. The chapter operating out of the Shattered Basin, standing silent watch over the Las Vegas nexus, maintains the highest security classification in the Western Hemisphere.

Field Teams The operational vanguard. Small cells of three to seven agents highly trained in combat, arcane theory, Wondermancy, and espionage. Field Teams are the only Sentinels most people will ever encounter, and even then, most will never realize who they just met.

A Sentinel field agent looks like a civilian. They carry concealed Wonder Gear and operate with a lethal authority that supersedes any local faction politics. When a Rift tears open, or a Crimson Covenant cell digs too deep into a buried ruin, the Field Teams are the scalpel.

The Specialized Branches

There are three distinct Orders within the Sentinels.

The Chronomists

The lore keepers. The archivists. The authors of this Codex.

The Chronomists preserve the true history of the world in sealed Vaults buried across the globe. They index the patterns of dimensional stability across millennia and maintain the unbroken continuity of knowledge that every other institution on Earth has surrendered. The Chronomist Observations scattered throughout this book are their legacy: named voices at specific moments in time, bleeding onto the page so that someone in the future might understand the cost of survival.

They are scholars, linguists, and researchers who chose this branch because they understand that the most dangerous weapon the Terrors possess is not violence. It is amnesia. The Great Lie succeeded because humanity simply forgot the truth. The Chronomists exist to ensure the world never forgets again.

[OBSERVATION — Chronomist Rashid ibn Suleiman, Baghdad Chapter House, 934 CE] §

There is a translator in the House of Wisdom who knows.

He renders the old Greek texts faithfully, and where a text describes the currents of the earth, he translates the passage as metaphor. As poetry. The censors read his pages and see a scholar’s flourish. A trained eye reads the same pages and sees a map.

I asked him once, carefully, why he does not simply copy the truth plainly. He said: plain truth is the first thing they burn. Nobody burns poetry. They memorize it.

I have verified his claim against the Archive. Four of the works we believed lost at Alexandria have reached this city alive, disguised as verse. They crossed six centuries and two empires inside the mouths of people who believed they were carrying beauty.

The Long Filtration hunts the questions. It has never learned to hunt a song.

The Artificers

The engineers who forge miracles in the dark.

The Artificers work with arcane physics that the surface world cannot even theorize. Their lineage of craft traces directly back to the Dragon Age, supplemented by cautious, highly classified collaboration with the Nether Dwarves. The Wonder Gear they forge is not for sale. Sentinel-grade equipment operates at a level that civilian Wondermancers can appreciate but never replicate.

They built the monitoring apparatus that tracks Ley Line decay. They forge the concealed weaponry that allows a three-agent Field Team to output the kinetic force of a small army. When First Age relics surface from the Gloom, the Artificers determine whether the object is a tool, a weapon, or a cataclysm waiting to detonate.

The Ebon Watch

Every faction in the Awakened world employs killers. Hardened combatants who have looked into the dark and survived it.

The Ebon Watch is an unbroken lineage stretching back to the Age of Myth. They are equipped with the most devastating Wonder Gear the Artificers could forge. They are psychically conditioned to withstand direct mental contact with Void-entities, forced through a selection process so agonizing that the majority of candidates break before the first year ends.

The Ebon Watch hunts Demons.

Not the minor incursions that Field Teams mop up. The Ebon Watch deploys against the manifestations that would slaughter an entire city if left unchecked. Demon Lords. Coordinated Nether breaches.

They do not grandstand. They do not collect Renown. When the Ebon Watch arrives, it is because something is happening that threatens the world. When the slaughter is finished, they vanish. The civilians they just saved rarely know they were ever there.

Sustained combat with Nether-frequency entities damages a practitioner's spiritual coherence in ways that never fully heal. Ebon Watch operatives carry invisible scars that no Biomancer can close. They accept this. The oath they swear explicitly acknowledges that the work will shorten their lives, fracture their sanity, and demand choices that no ethical framework can justify. They swear it anyway.

They are the last wall behind the last wall.

[FIELD LOG — Operative Kael Ashburne, Ebon Watch, Undisclosed Location, 2019] §

Contact at 0340. Class Three manifestation. A Nether Lord, partially corporeal, operating through a human host who had been missing for eleven days. The host was still conscious. I could see him screaming behind his own eyes.

The engagement lasted exactly four minutes. The resonance blade performed within tolerances. The binding held. The manifestation was ripped out and returned below the threshold.

The host survived. Physically.

I sat on the concrete with him for an hour afterward, because no one else was going to. He asked me what had happened to him. I told him what his mind could carry, and I swallowed the rest.

Filed for post-engagement frequency realignment. Third time this quarter. The medic noted the degradation pattern in my chart. I noted that she should mind her own pattern.

Four minutes. That is the part civilians do not understand. Four minutes is a short fight. The violence is not the cost. The cost is the eleven days of torture before I arrived, and the eleven years of nightmares the survivor has left.

Recruitment and the Burden of Knowledge

The Sentinels do not post listings. They do not accept volunteers. They simply watch.

Candidates are identified across all species based on criteria that have not changed since the dawn of the Order. They look for staggering psychological resilience and a frequency attunement that suggests the soul has been doing this exact work across multiple lifetimes. Some are tested without ever knowing they are being evaluated. Some are pushed into impossible scenarios designed entirely to reveal how they manage failure. By the time the invitation is extended, the candidate has already proven everything the Sentinels require.

Joining is a terminal commitment. The training takes years, encompassing arcane theory, deep history, and the brutal philosophical grounding of the Dragon Mandate.

But the hardest part is the unvarnished knowledge.

When a Sentinel initiate finally learns the absolute truth about the Dream Prison, the Ancient Terrors, and the fragile, rotting barriers of reality, something shifts inside their mind that never shifts back. The world permanently changes weight. Every mundane news headline, every political debate, and every petty territorial squabble between the Sanctuary factions takes on a sickening irony when you know exactly what is waiting in the dark to consume them all.

This is why almost no one’s story starts here. The Sentinels are not a door you walk in through. They are a door that opens to you, and only when they have decided what you can carry. Theirs is a calling that permanently alters what you see when you look at the night sky. The Sentinels know exactly how heavy that burden is, and they will not hand it to you until they are absolutely certain it will not break your spine.

The Ones Who Lead

The greatest Sentinels are the ones nearing the absolute end of their journey through the Grand Cycle. Souls who have lived so many mortal lives, across so many species and so many agonizing epochs, that their frequency has refined to a point of pure resonance. They are exactly one incarnation away from rejoining the Source.

The Order calls them the Luminants.

These are the true leaders of the Order. They possess a clarity of purpose that requires a thousand lifetimes of accumulated grief to achieve. When they speak, the room falls silent. They are not more powerful than their peers in any measurable, kinetic way. They are simply more present. More certain. More finished.

The Sentinels and the World

The Sentinels view every other faction as a variable to be managed in the service of survival. They do not favor the Unbroken's militant strength, the Concord's fragile diplomacy, the Ascendants' arrogant restoration, or the Vigil's terrified human supremacy. They favor equilibrium. When any single faction accumulates enough leverage to threaten the stability of the board, the Sentinels intervene. Subtly, almost always. Decisively, when left with no other option.

The Shadowmancers are their closest philosophical mirrors, and their most dangerous rivals. Both organizations manipulate the world from the dark. The difference lies entirely in intent. The Shadowmancers enforce equilibrium through ruthless, cynical sabotage. The Sentinels nurture stability through protection. They use the same scalpels for opposite surgeries. The two organizations have maintained a paranoid awareness of each other for centuries.

The Crimson Covenant is the cancer. Any organization that draws from the frequency of the Ancient Terrors represents an existential threat to the Dragon Mandate. The Sentinels have dismantled Covenant operations across multiple continents for thousands of years. The Covenant regards the Sentinels as the single greatest obstacle to their dark liberation. Both are entirely correct.

The Vigil presents a tragedy. Elias Crane's grievance is legitimate. Unaccountable organizations are making decisions that affect the globe without oversight. The Sentinels are one of them. Crane does not know about the Dragon Mandate, and if he did, it likely would not change his conclusion. The Sentinels have not yet decided how to engage with the Vigil, and that indecision is itself a statement about how seriously they take the threat of a man who is wrong about everything except the principle.
