Part One: The True Account Chapter Ten: The Factions
"Everyone in this room chose a side. Most of them chose it for good reasons. That is exactly what makes them so dangerous."
T he factions of the Awakened world are ideological gravity wells. They bind people through shared belief, forging loyalty, identity, and lethal enemies in equal measure, and the stakes are the shape of a civilization that has just woken from a six-thousand-year lie.
Some factions are ancient, possessing institutional memory and global reach curated over millennia in the dark. Others are bleeding-edge, rising directly from the pressure of the Reemergence. Not every operative announces their allegiance. Politicians, financiers, scholars, and community leaders move through the surface world advancing agendas they will never name out loud. Others are less subtle. Hobgoblins, as a rule, do not hide where they stand.
As the Kin breach the surface and the Great Lie rots away, Sanctuaries will become the most violently contested ground on the planet. They are the first physical spaces where humanity and the returning Kin can breathe the same air without the agony of dimensional dissonance. They are political crucibles. The factions understand that whoever builds structural power inside the Sanctuaries today will write the laws of the world tomorrow.
Every player on the board is already moving into position.
The Triangle and the Quadrant
Seven factions. Two layers.
Three of them fight over the immediate political struggle the Reemergence has forced onto the world: how should humans and Kin share the surface now that the six-thousand-year silence has ended? The Unbroken answer with iron and a ledger of grievances. The Vigil answers with the machinery of human institutions, sharpened by fear. The Concord answers with a tired, pragmatic argument for coexistence before the real enemy arrives at the door. Three positions. Incompatible. Visible. They clash openly in Sanctuaries, in city halls, in the comment sections of social media.
This is the Triangle. It is the war most players see first.
The other four operate on a more subtle layer. Their agendas are shaped by concerns older, stranger, and often larger than the question of who lives where on what terms. The Ascendants want to recalibrate the frequency of reality itself. The Shadowmancers want equilibrium, enforced by any means necessary. The Sentinels want the world to survive what is coming. The Crimson Covenant wants nature's cycle to end and believes it is mercy. These four surround the Triangle, using it, shaping it, occasionally siding with one vertex or another.
This is the Quadrant. It is what the Triangle is unknowingly fighting inside of.
A player engaged in the Triangle is fighting over what the world does tomorrow. A player engaged in the Quadrant is fighting over what the world could become.
Thursday, late. Three tables, ten feet apart.
At the first, a Hobgoblin veteran with Unbroken iron on his collar taught two young Goblins the names of the fallen cities, one cup of fungal tea per name. At the second, a Concord fixer talked a human contractor into hiring Kin labor, and there was no ideology anywhere in her pitch, only arithmetic. At the third, a man I recognize from Crane’s broadcasts nursed a single beer for two hours and filled a notebook, and what he wrote down was exactly what the other two tables would least want written.
No one raised a voice. No one reached for anything. The Accord is not even awake in this building yet, and still the room held. That is the part I keep turning over.
No banners. No fronts. Three tables, ten feet apart, each one certain of a different tomorrow. From where I sit, the war for the shape of the world looks like an ordinary Thursday. That is what makes it dangerous. It is also what makes it winnable.
The Triangle
The Unbroken
"Iron Sharpens Iron"
Goal: Reclamation | Colors: Rust Orange and Gunmetal Grey | Symbol: A length of heavy iron chain
The Unbroken do not speak like politicians. They speak like veterans who have won too many battles and buried too many friends. Their thesis is direct: six thousand years in the abyss is enough. The Kin bled in the dark to protect a surface world that exiled them, and then erased them. That debt is real. It is time to collect.
They drape themselves in the colors of industry and war. Their aesthetic is tailored wool concealing iron plate, heavy boots, and weapons worn openly. Their code of martial honor is no performance; it is the frame everything else hangs from. The Unbroken believe that peace maintained by anything less than superior force is simply a peace waiting to be broken. They respect enemies who fight well. They hold absolute contempt for people who pretend there is no fight.
Vorgoth the Chainbreaker forged this faction from grief. He spent decades in the Deep Gloom holding the line against Demon sieges, a war of attrition that slaughtered his entire generation. His crusade to the surface is a vow to the fallen, ensuring their sacrifice meant more than dying in the dark for a world that forgot them. He is entirely correct about the history. What he intends to do with that history is the only question that matters.
Prominent Companies The Cindered Skulls: A Hobgoblin-led security firm that doubles as a militia. They patrol Sanctuary perimeters and enforce order with brutal efficiency. Blood Knuckles: A mixed-species fight crew known for fierce loyalty, late-night brawls, and settling disputes with their hands rather than their words.
Prominent Personas Vorgoth the Chainbreaker:the battle-scarred Hobgoblin veteran who leads the Cindered Skulls. He carries an axe called Ember that wreathes itself in alchemical flame when drawn. He does not draw it lightly. Captain Rork:a Giant-blooded trench-fighter with a collection of human military history books and a tactical mind that has surprised everyone who underestimated her.
The Feat of Might. Status flows to those who demonstrate, not those who claim. Standing is won in the duel, at the front of the line, in the contested dark. A reputation among the Unbroken is a ledger of witnessed deeds, and they audit it constantly.
The Concord
"Adapt or Die"
Goal: Synthesis | Colors: Amber and Verdigris | Symbol: A brass gear
The Concord are the people holding the ceiling up while the other factions argue over who deserves to sit in the room. They are the fixers, the bartenders, the engineers, and the smugglers who know exactly where to find what you need at two in the morning when everything goes wrong.
They believe looking backward to the Age of Myth is a luxury nobody can afford, and attempting to subjugate humanity is mass suicide. Their philosophy is pure synthesis: Kin magic and Human technology bolted together. They embrace the grit of the machine age, favoring grease-stained canvas, brass optics, and worn leather. They are the mortar of the Sanctuary, mediating explosive disputes while quietly turning a profit.
Corvus, the Concord's de facto architect in Los Angeles, is the man who rediscovered the ritual required to bind a Sanctuary. He arrived in Prime Reality a long time ago, fleeing a war he will not discuss. He carries a tired, brutally honest answer for every fanatic offering a perfect solution: show me the part where people stop dying while you implement it. Corvus knows exactly what is waiting in the deep. His pragmatism is born from the cold arithmetic of being the only man in the room who understands the stakes.
Prominent Companies The Switchboard: A union of hackers and Wondermancers who maintain the Sanctuary's Wonder Gear and arcane surveillance network. The Drifters: A motley crew of humans and Kin who have no interest in ideological wars. They just want to survive the night and have a good time doing it.
Prominent Personas Corvus:an expatriate who rejected the path he was on and has spent decades building something he can point to instead. He owns The Republic. He knows things he will not tell you. He is doing everything he can. Jax "Sprocket" Vane:the human Artificer who keeps the venue's Wonder Gear operational and drives everything too fast.
The Feat of Unity. The Concord measures worth in alliances built, not battles won. Standing accrues to the one who brokered the impossible introduction, kept the machine running, stood the round that turned strangers into a crew. Their unit of wealth is the favor, and everyone’s books are open.
The Vigil
"Humanity Watches. Humanity Endures."
Goal: Human Protection | Colors: Burnished Silver and Cobalt Blue | Symbol: An open eye above a clasped hand
The Vigil operates in the blinding light of day. Their leader runs a popular podcast. He testifies before city councils. He publishes op-eds in newspapers that reach millions of people who have never heard the word Sanctuary. He states, plainly and reasonably, that the Kin Reemergence is an unconsented occupation. He points out that the Accord was built without humanity's knowledge, and that The Vigil exists because someone has to protect ordinary people.
Elias Crane is not a lunatic. He is methodical. He has a legitimate grievance. The Accord was built in secret, and powerful organizations are making decisions that affect the globe without oversight. He has taken those true observations and forged them into conclusions so elegant and polished that reasonable people find them convincing.
Crane was once a Sentinel archivist. Gifted, disciplined, and devoted. His daughter, an initiate on her first field posting, died during a Kin crossing incident. The Sentinels closed ranks and categorized it as an accident. When Crane demanded accountability, they showed him the door. He left with deep knowledge of Sanctuary mechanics, a shattered heart, and the deadliest wrong conclusion in the modern world. He is beginning to find fragments in the archive materials he took when he left, materials that use the word "Kin" in ways that don't match his understanding. He doesn't know what to do with them yet.
The Vigil does not fight inside Sanctuaries. It fights in city halls, on front pages, and in congressional inboxes. When governments move against the Kin, the Accord cannot protect anyone. Crane has told his leadership privately: "We don't need to win inside. We just need to make outside uninhabitable."
Prominent Companies The Open Record: Crane’s media and transparency network: podcasts, investigative journalism, whistleblower channels. The public face of the movement and its most effective recruitment tool. First Response: Former law enforcement and military who patrol surface areas where Kin emergence has been reported. They call themselves a neighborhood watch. They are more organized than that. The Common Ground Foundation: The political and legislative arm. Lobbyists, staffers, and elected officials like Representative Kalcek advancing human-centric policy in the surface world's institutions.
Prominent Personas Elias Crane, the Warden:the founder and public face. Soft-spoken, methodical, carrying a grief the Sentinels could have avoided creating. His conclusions are wrong. He has not yet been in the room where those conclusions meet their oldest answer. Representative Dana Kalcek:a Phoenix city council member who believes in the cause because she has seen the fear in her constituents' faces. That fear is real, even when its target is misidentified. She is more reachable than Crane. She doesn't know everything.
The Feat of Influence. Standing in the Vigil is structural: institutions recruited, narratives shifted, power built where no duel can reach it. The Vigil counts its victories in ordinances and headlines, and its victories do not disappear when a champion falls.
The Quadrant
The Ascendants
"Magic Is Our Birthright"
Goal: Restoration | Colors: Amethyst Purple and Champagne Gold | Symbol: A crystalline spiral staircase crown
The Ascendants intend to terraform the Earth back to a state it has not occupied since the First Age. They seek a high-magic, elegant world governed by those with the arcane power to understand what they are governing. They find the modern surface world visually and spiritually dead. To an Ascendant, human technology is merely the clumsy prosthesis a species invents when it forgets how to wield actual power.
Their leadership is dominated by the Fae High-Born, but their ranks include any mortal who refuses to suffer a mundane existence. They are wealthy, visually immaculate, and crushing in their condescension. Their fashion fuses boardroom power-dressing with ethereal, ancient robes. They know things the other factions do not, simply because they have been alive longer.
Princess Isolde Argent presents herself as a divine emissary descended from the Aetherium to guide lesser realms back to the First Harmony. She speaks with the patronizing pity one reserves for lost children. She is charming. She is flawless. She is a monster.
Isolde was exiled from the Aetherial Court for engineering a creation so perfectly harmonious it overwrote the free will of other Fae, locking them in blissful, mindless worship. The Court called it aesthetic tyranny and banished her. The wound to her absolute ego is the engine driving her entire operation. The restoration she preaches reaches further back than the Age of Myth. She is aiming for the First Age, when the world's base frequency ran higher and Prime Reality itself was more hospitable to Fae. She does not say this out loud. She talks about beauty and harmony and does not explain what a truly harmonious Prime Reality would feel like to a human body calibrated to the world as it currently exists. Humans, Kin, and faction members alike are raw material for the point she is making to an audience back home. Their free will is an inconvenient variable she fully intends to resolve.
Prominent Companies House of Ashanor: The most ancient Fae bloodline, acting as the supreme royalty of the faction. The Gilded Circle: A clique of high-status socialites who trade in the most valuable currency of all: leverage. Eternal Light: A secretive cabal of Witches and Articians, the Fae name for artists whose medium is magic itself, who push the boundaries of magic and magic-infused art. Mostly for bragging rights. The results are occasionally dangerous.
Prominent Personas Isolde Argent:the Fae exile who hosts the most exclusive, most secretive gatherings in the city. Her smile is perfect. Her plans are longer than anyone in the room. Lord Valerius:a Vampiric financier whose wealth funds the faction's Prime Reality operations. His affection for humans runs approximately as deep as his affection for a particularly well-bred horse. How a creature of the Silent King's making came to hold his own leash is a question Valerius does not answer, and the Ascendants have decided the money matters more than the mystery.
The Feat of Status. To be an Ascendant is to be seen. Standing is presence at the right gathering, mastery of the old riddles, the demonstrated refinement that separates those who belong from those who merely attend. It is a currency of glances, and the exchange rate is merciless.
The Shadowmancers
"The Unseen Hand"
Goal: Equilibrium | Colors: Midnight Blue and Quicksilver | Symbol: A keyhole shaped like an eye
The Shadowmancers do not recruit. They approach. If you find yourself wondering whether a Shadowmancer has noticed you, they already have, and they decided weeks ago whether or not you are a liability.
Their thesis is simple and terrifying: history is a pendulum. If the Unbroken win, they become tyrants. If Humanity wins unchecked, they commit genocide. The Shadowmancers exist to sabotage the victor. They are the spies, assassins, and information brokers who ensure no single faction ever holds the crown long enough to calcify into a dictatorship. They sell intelligence to everyone and trust no one. They facilitate deals in the dark and execute leaders who threaten the balance. They are certain they are doing the right thing, which makes them the most dangerous idealists on the board.
Prominent Companies The Reapers: An elite cadre of physical and magical assassins who sculpt the fate of nations by ensuring their kills look entirely accidental. They are artists. The Black Eyes: The intelligence wing. Spies, seers, and analysts who gather data from every corner of the globe and turn secrets into leverage. Velumencia: The armament forge. Craftsmen who produce Wonder Gear that is subtle, lethal, and undetectable: cloaks woven from shadow, blades that register as nothing. If the Reapers are the blade, Velumencia sharpens it.
Prominent Personas The Weaver:an information broker whose true face has never been seen by anyone who would recognize it later. Communication through intermediaries and notes left in places you were not expecting. Cipher:the operative who uses illusion magic to disappear in plain sight. The rumors about Cipher are probably all true.
The Feat of Secrets. A Shadowmancer’s standing is measured by what cannot be traced to them. The perfect operation is the one no one knows occurred; the perfect operative is a rumor their own colleagues cannot confirm. They keep score, meticulously, in a ledger no one has ever seen.
The Sentinels
"The Dragon Accord Holds"
Goal: Containment | Colors: Slate Grey and Bioluminescent Blue | Symbol: A raised lantern
The Sentinels are not playing the same game as the other factions. They have never played the same game. While the rest of the world engages in political theater, Sanctuary governance, and Renown competitions, the Sentinels are watching the deep.
They are the oldest organization the Awakened world will acknowledge. Their records predate the founding of human civilization. They enforce the Accord within the Sanctuaries because the Accord is theirs. They built it, they maintain it, and they have held the line through apocalypses that would have broken anyone else's nerve. They are the bouncers of reality. Respected by all. Invited to the afterparty by none.
Almost no one begins their journey here. Sentinel knowledge is a crushing burden before it is ever a gift. Joining the Sentinels is not a matter of declaring allegiance. It is a matter of being observed, evaluated, and eventually offered something most people are not ready to carry.
If the Shadowmancers control the surface ruthlessly from the shadows, the Sentinels nurture it beneficently from the same shadows. Same methodology. Opposite intentions.
Prominent Companies The Chronomists: The lore keepers, historians, and archivists of the Order. They maintain the Vaults, preserve texts from the Dragon Age, and ensure the continuity of the Old Ways. Ebon Watch: A black-ops team that uses guile and advanced Wonder Gear to hunt Demons and close Rifts before the other factions know they were there.
Prominent Personas Warden Kael:the field commander of the LA Sanctuary. Economical with words. Absolute in action. Agent Rook:Ebon Watch investigator, specialized in identifying when someone is no longer fully themselves.
The Feat of Duty. The Sentinels do not keep standing. They keep the watch. Advancement in the Order is recognition rather than reward: rifts closed, initiates shepherded through the threshold, service rendered to an organism older than fame.
The full history and structure of the Sentinels is documented in Chapter Eleven.
The Crimson Covenant
"Burn It All Down"
Goal: Entropy | Colors: Blood Red and Vantablack | Symbol: An eclipsed sun ringed by a bleeding corona
The Covenant does not believe the world is broken. They believe it was built wrong from the start.
Their theology dictates that the Grand Cycle of souls is a prison and the Dragons are its wardens. Endless reincarnation is not a gift; it is a mechanism of control, recycling souls through lives of suffering just to fuel the Source. The Ancient Terrors are not villains to the Covenant. They are the only beings in existence who looked at this slaughterhouse and said no.
The Covenant promises true freedom from the Cycle: a final, silent peace. They think the coming apocalypse is liberation, not catastrophe.
This is not a faction of snarling monsters. They look like beautiful socialites, corrupt politicians, and desperate addicts. That is how the Terrors have always operated. The Covenant does not recruit fanatics. It looks for the grieving, the desperate, and the ambitious: anyone found at their lowest point and offered a purpose. They are wrong about the solution. They are very often right about the wound.
Prominent Companies The Red Masque: A hedonistic cult of wealthy elites who dabble in demonology for thrills and power, only to discover the power they summoned is now holding the leash.
Prominent Personas Xylos:the prophet who leads the Covenant. He was not always Xylos. His real name is Dr. Boris Fincher, a historian and archaeologist who lost his family in an act of senseless violence and found the Obsidian Tear in his grief. The Chained God reached out through it and offered him a vision of his family whole and at peace in a reality without pain. He accepted. Very few people know the name beneath the cult name. Lady Vespa:the socialite who makes everything look like a party until it isn't. Malakor:the warlock whose body has become something he shares with a presence that was not invited.
The Feat of Corruption. The Covenant rewards entropy. Standing rises with each rival hollowed, each defense weakened, each faltering soul brought gently to the edge and offered the way down. They keep their accounting in converts.
The Shape of It
Seven factions. No morally correct side. Every single one of them is fighting for something real, using methods they have decided are acceptable, aimed at outcomes they have not fully comprehended.
The Reemergence forces a choice upon everyone who steps into the Awakened world: which version of tomorrow are you willing to bleed for?
The Renown you earn, the Company you forge, the debts you collect, and the secrets you keep all carry actual weight in a world that is actively being written. The Chronomist Archive records outcomes. What happens in the Sanctuaries tonight will shape what the Codex says about this era tomorrow.
Choose. Build. The record is open.
