Part One: The True Account Chapter Three: The Dragons
E very experience ever endured is recorded.
Every violent loss. Every quiet, unexpected grace. The full, irreplaceable texture of being a particular person living a particular life does not evaporate when your heart stops. Something vast exists specifically to catch the weight of mortal memory so that existence does not simply dissolve into silence.
Those custodians are the Dragons.
What the Dragons Are
The planet you stand upon is a living being. Earth possesses its own spiritual resonance, its own titanic consciousness: the Ley Lines that crisscross the deep rock are its veins, and the power they carry is its blood. Over billions of years, as the Grand Cycle deepened into this corner of the cosmos, that consciousness grew complex enough to take physical form.
Seven forms. Seven aspects of singular planetary intelligence, each expressing a different fundamental force: life, order, time, death, fire, storm, and the stars beyond the atmosphere. The Dragons arose as the aspects of Earth’s consciousness. They are what the Earth looks like when it opens its eyes.
Every culture on Earth has dreamt of them. The great serpent at the heart of the world. The coiled power beneath the mountain. The leviathan in the deep ocean waters. These cultures were all reaching for the same truth from different directions.
The Weight They Carry
When a life ends, the spirit ascends through the spectrum of frequency, shedding its meat and moving toward reintegration with the Source. But it must pass through a Dragon first.
In that passage, the Dragon absorbs the spirit entirely. It takes the memories, the grief, the thousand small indignities and quiet triumphs of a mortal span, and holds them. It then releases the spirit clean. Stripped of its particular weight, the soul is returned to the Source as pure evolved essence.
The particulars remain with the Dragon.
Every Dragon is a living archive of every mortal life that has ever passed through its domain. Every human who ever loved. Every Kin who ever bled. This is why Dragon wisdom has nothing to do with intelligence. They lived history through billions of eyes, across billions of lifetimes. When a Dragon acts, it acts with the accumulated weight of the dead informing every decision.
Think of what it means to carry the psychic weight of a billion tragedies. Then consider what it means that five of these beings voluntarily halted their existence, descended into the bedrock, and dedicated the entirety of that massive consciousness to holding a prison door shut.
That is what the five sleeping Dragons are doing right now. Beneath your feet.
This morning, I was permitted to be present when a dying elder of the Greenskin tribes performed the rite of Passage-Giving. She was a hundred and forty years old. She had never feared death in her life.
"Onyxus takes the memory," she told me, when I asked what she felt. "Not me. The memory. Nothing is lost."
She died three hours later. Peaceful. Absolutely certain of exactly where she was going.
I have penned the justifications for the Great Lie. I understand the strategy. But I want this observation to sit beside those volumes, because I want the record complete. We did not merely steal the surface from the Kin.
We took away their ability to die without fear. I am not sure the architects of the Accord fully priced that.
The Two Who Are Gone
Two Dragons died in the aftermath of the First Sundering. Their deaths were a sacrifice.
Veridian, the Emerald Pillar
The Green Mother | Domain: Life, Growth, Nature, Earth, Endurance | Status: Shattered
Veridian was every root system, every underground network, and every ecosystem that breathes as a single organism. She was the living World Tree. Her roots gripped the bedrock; her canopy brushed the upper dimensions. She was the planet's capacity for life itself, given form.
The simplified histories say she fell in the Ancient War. The truth is more costly.
When the First Sundering cracked the continent, the world itself fell out of tune, and the Fae, eldest of the world’s peoples, who had made their homes in Veridian’s branches, began to die. The very air of the broken world became a slow poison to the firstborn. Veridian offered herself. The greatest Fae alive assembled on her massive, spiraling boughs and formed the One Choir, joining their voices to the work she had already begun: a new dimension woven from the tree’s own essence, the Aetherium. The spell required an impossible volume of raw Life energy. Veridian supplied it. She burned to fuel a doorway for a people who would have perished without it.
When her physical form collapsed, her remaining life force scattered outward across the globe. The Goblins, the Hobgoblins, the Ogres. The Beast Kin, her wilder legacy. At the biological and spiritual root, they are all fragments of Veridian's dispersed essence. She died and became her new people. They carry her in their cells. The Fae who sang the spell that consumed her owe their civilization to her death. The Greenskins, as the Goblin, Hobgoblin, and Ogre peoples are together named, emerged from her remains and owe their existence to it. Both peoples are Veridian's children. Neither has fully reckoned with what that means.
The World Tree fractured with her, its seeds scattered globally. These Heartwood Saplings are the most powerful magical anchors on Earth. One of them is the tree at the center of The Republic in Los Angeles. Dormant for millennia, it is still alive. Nothing that grew from Veridian ever fully dies.
Sol-Axion, the Adamantine Serpent
The Architect | Domain: Order, Reason, Law, Structure, Ambition | Status: Perished
Sol-Axion was the Dragon of intelligent design. He was the planetary force that made the laws of physics consistent, ensuring cause followed effect and the universe cohered. He was the reason things make sense.
He did not die in the initial catastrophe. He held the rearguard. While the surviving Dragons retreated to fortify the dimensional barriers, Sol-Axion burned through his entire essence to keep the door shut long enough for the others to get through it. His dispersed essence settled into the emerging human species. He granted them the spark of ambition and the compulsive need to forge order from chaos.
Humanity's greatest strengths are Sol-Axion's gift. So is their catastrophic blindness. He gave humans the genius to build civilizations, but he did not survive to give them the wisdom to know when to stop. The Great Lie was only possible because of Sol-Axion's gift. Humanity loves structure so deeply that they will readily accept a lie, so long as it keeps the darkness organized.
The Five Who Sleep
The Great Slumber is labor. It is the most agonizing psychic exertion imaginable, sustained without pause for millions of years. The five remaining Dragons descended into the deep places of the Earth and devoted their full consciousness to the Dream Prison. Their dreams are the cage holding the Ancient Terrors.
Each sleeps in a location native to their domain. Each rests within a Dwarven Bastion, guarded by the Nether Dwarves who went so deep they can never return to the sun.
Astra-Kaelus, the Astral Serpent
The Weaver | Status: Slumbering beneath the northern pole
Every soul that has ever sparked into a living body passed through Astra-Kaelus. She is the gate through which life enters the world. She sleeps where the planet's magnetic field creates a natural conduit to the cosmos. The northern auroras flicker with light that is, to a trained eye, the visible edge of her dreaming. She is still working in her sleep. New souls still arrive. She is currently performing two impossibilities at once.
Chronomoso, the Wyrm of the Rift
The Keeper | Status: Slumbering beneath the Shattered Basin
Where the other Dragons carry the memories of the dead, Chronomoso holds the memory of time itself. Every turning point in the history of the Earth exists somewhere within his dreaming consciousness. He sleeps beneath what is now Las Vegas. The dimensional thinning there bleeds from his time-bending consciousness into the surrounding reality. The human city built entirely on reinvention, on the desperate hope that the next roll changes everything, sits directly above the god of causality and consequence. The Chronomists have observed the irony.
Onyxus, the Obsidian Maw
The Warden | Status: Slumbering in the deepest oceanic trench
Onyxus is the filter that keeps the Source from rotting. When a soul passes through the Cycle too corrupted to be returned cleanly, it reaches her. She makes the call. Cleanse and release, or reject entirely. The corrupted souls she rejects become The Lost. Untethered souls pressing against the Gloom, the deep country where the exiled peoples endure, direct their theology of absolute hatred toward Onyxus. She is the one who told each of them they were not worthy of salvation. The increase in demon incursions is not random; it is the Terrors recruiting The Lost, giving them fresh body and renewed purpose.
Pyralia, the Solar Heart
The Forge | Status: Slumbering within the deep volcanic networks
Pyralia is the geothermal heat beneath the crust. She is passion converted into form. She sleeps in the volcanic networks of the Nether Realm, and her heat is what the ancient Dwarves channeled when they built their empire. The arcane machines this record will teach you to call Wonder Gear are, at their source, Pyralia’s influence bleeding through stone into the hands of the engineers who manifest her potential. Her domain includes destruction as much as creation. The Crimson Covenant, a cult of the ending you will meet in these pages, preaches burning the world clean; their fire is a twisted corruption of hers.
Hydrax, the Unruly
The Storm | Status: Slumbering in a region of perpetual oceanic storm
Hydrax is the unpredictable force that prevents any system from calcifying into a permanent pattern. She sleeps in the most violent waters on Earth, a region where storms have raged without ceasing for as long as records exist. The Ancient Terrors want a fixed, paralyzed universe. Hydrax is the Dragon who ensures nothing ever freezes. Wild magic is hers. The Ascendants, old-blooded aristocrats among the powers you will meet, dream of a perfect and harmonious order; their vision has no room for Hydrax. The world is getting stranger today because Hydrax is dreaming uneasily as the prison walls thin.
They broke ground on The Rift today. I watched from the parking structure across the street. Press, investors, a lot of expensive suits.
Four thousand meters below the handshakes, Chronomoso is dreaming. The Fifth Bastion Dwarves are standing at their posts. They have been standing at those posts since before this country or this language existed.
The CEO told the gathered crowd that Las Vegas has always felt like "a place where time works differently."
He has no idea how right he is.
I filed the standard report. I noted the seismic monitoring requirements given the proximity to the Nexus.
What the Dragons Need from You
The Dragons cannot be contacted or summoned. Waking them is not an option anyone should be considering, as the resulting apocalyptic shockwave would make the Terrors look merciful.
They need time.
Time for the world to remember what it was forced to forget. Time for humanity and the Kin to stop fighting the wrong war. Time for the Sanctuaries, the last houses of welcome, to reform.
Veridian died and became her people. Sol-Axion burned himself to ash to buy the others ten more minutes. Five Dragons have been asleep for countless years, holding a prison door shut with their dreams.
The least we can do is not waste the blood they spent buying us this hour.
