Part One: The True Account Chapter Two: The Source
E very civilization across every era has searched the heavens for hope or guidance, and most have never fully grasped it. There is a Source.
It is not a deity. It is not a consciousness in any form you would recognize. The closest approximation is potential; infinite, undivided, and prior to causality. Before matter, before time, before the first thought conceived, there was the Source. It contained everything that would ever exist, undifferentiated and in perfect harmony.
What your various traditions call God, the Tao, Brahman, or the Void are not wrong. They are simply incomplete. Each is a hand reaching toward the same shape in the dark and returning with a different contour.
From the Source, existence began as an exhalation.
Consciousness fragmented outward, violently individuating into countless distinct points of experience. You are one of these fragments. So is every living creature that has ever shared this universe with you. The Source did not make you separate from itself; the Source became you. In doing so, it gained the one thing it could not possess in perfect unity: the experience of being particular. Of possessing this specific mind. This specific grief and love.
This is the Grand Cycle. The outward breath is existence, experience, and individuation. The inward breath is death, purification, and reintegration. Every soul that has ever sparked into being is a movement in a cosmic lung that has been breathing since before the concept of time.
The Dragons are the stewards of this cycle. They emerged from the first exhalation as something halfway between divine architects and raw physical laws. They do not rule or judge. They tend and regulate. When a soul completes its rotation in the physical world, it passes through their keeping. They strip away the weight of the life lived, absorb the memory into their own vast archive, and return the refined energy to the Source clean.
This is the system the Ancient Terrors want to corrupt.
They are driven by the cold, flawless logic of survivors. They do not submit to the cycle. They refuse to be erased again.
Their solution is to freeze the lung.
To stop the rhythm of the Cycle entirely. They seek to render existence static, locking every soul into permanent, unchanging servitude. No death, no return to the Source. An eternal, paralyzed now, controlled absolutely with the Terrors at its center.
This is what the Dragons imprisoned when the First Sundering shook the world.
This is what is still trying to get out.
Monstra
For most of Earth's history, humanity did not walk alone on the surface.
The beings your folklore has warped into nightmares; your goblins and ogres, your serpent-folk and Fae, your giants and the dozens of ancient peoples compressed into the category of "monsters” are not creatures of darkness. They are the Kin. They are as old as humanity, as varied, and as wholly capable of grace, cruelty, and spectacular failure.
The word monster descends from the Latin monstra. It means those who give dark portent. A sign. A warning.
The Kin were never the thing you were warned about. They were the warning itself. Bound by ancient compacts, they watched the borders of human civilization while the Dragons slept and the Secret War raged in the deep.
Then the Terrors changed their tactics.
Rather than armies, they deployed something much more sinister: ideas. Whispers slipped into the dreaming minds of humans. Paranoia that felt like inherited memories. Over centuries, patient and invisible, these psychic agents worked at the seams between human society and the Kin. The Terrors did not need to win a great battle. They only needed to make humanity afraid. And they planted their perversions in stories, in language, in the word monster itself, stripping it of its original meaning.
Fear did the rest.
By the time the Third Sundering concluded, the Kin were driven to retreat. They descended into the Nether Realm, the world beneath the world, into the hidden enclaves and the crushing margins of a world that had been made to see them as predators. They did not leave because they were defeated. They left because remaining meant a war that would destroy what they were trying to protect: the humans.
The ones who retained the truth, the Sentinels, with their Chronomist archivists, the quiet watchers in the dark, folded themselves into the shadows. They maintained the Vaults, the hidden archives of the true record. They watched and waited for the moment when the truth would become necessary again.
That moment is now.
The Kin are surfacing. The agents of the Terrors grow bolder as the Dream Prison, the cage of dreaming minds that holds them, weakens, and the Kin who have spent millennia in the margins know what that means better than any surface dweller. They return because the alternative is losing the Earth a second time.
I've been watching the same corner of 7th and Broadway for eleven years. The bar on that corner, The Republic, the humans call it, sits on a Ley Line that's been active since before the city existed. The Tongva knew it. The Paa-Goom knew it before them.
Three months ago a Greenskin family started coming in on Thursdays. They wear hats, keep to a booth in the back. The bartender, a human with no Accord training whatsoever, started leaving their preferred table open for them. Nobody told her to. She just started doing it.
I have filed seventeen incident reports in eleven years. This is the first one where I didn't know what category to put it in.
I think the category is: A beginning.
